Apart from its primary goal of being the one stop resource center for Slammer, On Layout tries to explore and understand the layout principles that developed across different times and mediums.
For the pragmatists that are not satisfied with exploration and understanding, On Layout will also attempt implementation patterns for the present publishing platforms and tools.
While the format is akin to a book, the interactiveness and its lifecycle closely resemble that of a web application. Articles grow in feature and content and there will be bugs.
At this point in time, the following features seem the most pertinent for coverage.
- Measurement & Proportion
A lot of the topics related to layouts have been covered in numerous books and articles. The goal of On Layout is to consolidate those learnings and apply them to current and impending technologies.
Have a look!
Every page on this website contains a layout spec that can be displayed or downloaded. These layout specs are created using Slammer and exported in two different formats.
The JSON format is machine and human readable. On Layout uses the open source jSlammer jQuery plugin to display the grid from the JSON spec. The second format is the Slam2 format which can be imported into Slammer for further customization.
These templates can be used in any way you want as long as they are not redistributed. Redistributions are covered by the creative commons license at the bottom of this page.
The jSlammer jQuery plugin (v0.1α) can display uniform (section + gutter) grids, golden and harmonious(equal) sections. Each of these overlays can be constrained to a portion of the page by grouping them into layers.
Overlays are drawn onto the web page using the HTML5 canvas element. While the On Layout website displays the entire spec, the plugin does allow selective display of layout elements.
At some point in time, the plugin will also support interaction with the elements to display information about each of them.
